Lye safety: weigh everything on a scale. Volume measurements are how batches go wrong. Always pour lye into water; water poured onto lye can erupt out of the container. Wear goggles and gloves, mix somewhere with fresh air, label your lye solution, and keep kids and pets out of the room. Worth reading: Certified Lye's safety instructions, Soapy Stuff by DeeAnna Weed, and the NIOSH guide to sodium hydroxide.
